Here some of the latest news concerning the recently opened airport north of Castellon on the Costa Azahar:
At Fitur 2015 (International Tourism Trade Fair, 28.1.-1.2.2015) representatives of the airport and of the Diputacion de Castellon were in negotiations with the airline ‘Air Europa’ as well as six charter flight operators according to El Mundo, in order to attract tourists to the province through Castellon Airport. Europlayas, Odeon Tours and Viajes Olympia / Serhs were among the companies involved in talks.
According to El Mediterraneo Ryanair is also in negotiations with airport representatives, and Wizzair might also be interested, whereas Easyjet and Vueling are currently not considering to add the Costa Azahar to their destinations.
El Mundo reports that according to the environmental group ‘Gecen’ (Grupo para el Estudio y Conservación de los Espacios Naturales) the orientation of the runway of Castellon airport does not take into account predominant wind directions, and that it should be changed. According to Gecen a report from the environmental group from 2005 had been ignored.
This follows an aborted landing In the night of 30 January. The plane returning from Madrid with the football team of Villareal could not land at Castellon airport because of strong winds and had to be redirected to Manises, Valencia.
