Beautiful Peniscola

Peniscola, Town by the Sea

Peiscola castle and old town

Peniscola is probably the most well known town of the Costa del Azahar, made famous by the film "El Cid" which was partly shot here.

The old town and the castle are situated on a small peninsula. It is a beautiful setting which looks dramatic from wherever you approach it. The old town is a picturesque labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets with old town houses featuring pretty balconies with hanging baskets.

In summer it gets quite busy and there are a lot of little shops opening, which sell arts & crafts, plus restaurants offering the locally caught fish. You can sit in the narrow pedestrianised streets or in the squares and enjoy the lovely food or have a drink.

Out of season it is a very different picture and in winter you might not see anybody on the streets at all.
Outside the old town you have the beaches on either side, lined with apartment buildings and hotels plus a more modern extension to the old town.
Peniscola is one of the main tourist places on the Costa del Azahar - but it is mostly people with holiday homes rather than the package tourist that comes here. The atmosphere is friendly and family orientated.

The hills above Peniscola have been partly built up with pretty villas and apartments, but go towards the Sierra d'Irta and you have a completely unspoilt coastline with small bays, and it is also excellent walking territory.
